Rebecca George and Kristin Lochner, students of the MA in Sustainable Cultural Heritage, recently collaborated with their professor, Barbara Staniscia, for an article on sustainability in the tourist industry that was published in an Italian academic journal for geography teachers.
The article (written in Italian) is introduced thus:
Overtourism occurs when the carrying capacity – in physical, environmental, social, psychological terms – of a tourist site or destination is exceeded. It implies a deterioration of the quality of life for residents and of visitor experiences. It is a growing phenomenon fueled by the increase of international tourist flows, assisted by the augmented influences of low-cost travel companies and cruise tourism, and by the use of social media. Public policies are needed to reduce its negative impacts.
